Animals in Thai are a joy to learn, because so many Thai animal names are little word pictures: a zebra is a "striped horse", a seal is a "water cat" and a starfish is a "star fish". This page has 60 animals with pictures, romanization and clear audio, from ช้าง (chang, elephant), Thailand's national animal, to ม้าน้ำ (ma nam, seahorse). Farm animals and pets in Thai
Start with animals your child sees in picture books and in the countryside: วัว (wua, cow), ควาย (khwai, water buffalo), หมู (mu, pig), แพะ (phae, goat), แกะ (kae, sheep), ม้า (ma, horse) and ลา (la, donkey). At home: หมา (ma, dog), แมว (maeo, cat, which sounds just like a meow), กระต่าย (kratai, rabbit), หนู (nu, mouse) and ปลาทอง (pla thong, goldfish, "gold fish"). Listen carefully to หมา (dog, rising tone) and ม้า (horse, high tone): the same "ma" with two tones. It is a perfect first tone game.
The water buffalo, ควาย, has worked in Thai rice fields for centuries, and it is also the picture for the letter ค on the Thai alphabet chart. Several other animals in this game are alphabet pictures too: ง งู (snake), ช ช้าง (elephant), ต เต่า (turtle), ล ลิง (monkey) and ส เสือ (tiger).
Wild and zoo animals in Thai
At the zoo, look for ช้าง (elephant), สิงโต (singto, lion), เสือ (suea, tiger), หมี (mi, bear), ลิง (ling, monkey), ยีราฟ (yiraf, giraffe), ฮิปโป (hippo) and แรด (raet, rhino). Word families make Thai animals easy to guess:
- The ม้า family: ม้าลาย (zebra, "striped horse") and ม้าน้ำ (seahorse, "water horse").
- The หมา family: หมาป่า (wolf, "forest dog"), หมาจิ้งจอก (fox) and หมาใน (jackal).
- The เสือ family: เสือดาว (leopard, "star tiger", for its spots).
- The หมี family: หมีขั้วโลก (polar bear, "pole bear").
Sea animals in Thai: the ปลา family
Thailand has long coastlines, and many sea creatures begin with ปลา (pla, fish), even when they are not fish: ปลาวาฬ (whale), ปลาดาว (starfish, "star fish"), ปลาหมึก (squid, "ink fish"), ปลาหมึกยักษ์ (octopus, "giant ink fish") and ปลาปักเป้า (pufferfish). Others: โลมา (loma, dolphin), ฉลาม (chalam, shark), ปู (pu, crab), กุ้ง (kung, prawn), แมงกะพรุน (jellyfish) and the delightful แมวน้ำ (seal, "water cat").

The little mark ๆ means "say it again", so โฮ่ง ๆ is "hong hong". Try the animal sounds game, then make the Thai sound for each animal together.
Elephants in Thai culture
The elephant is Thailand's national animal. Thai Elephant Day, วันช้างไทย, is celebrated on 13 March, when elephants in some places are given a huge fruit buffet. White elephants were once treasured by kings, and elephants appear in temple art, festivals and folk tales. Ask your child to find ช้าง in the game, then count the elephant's legs, ears and trunk in Thai with numbers in Thai.
Thailand also uses the twelve zodiac animals for years, as in China. Children like finding their own year animal.
How to teach animals in Thai at home
- Age 2-3: five animals and their sounds: หมา, แมว, วัว, หมู, ปลา.
- Age 3-4: Find it with Golu, who asks "ช้าง อยู่ไหนเอ่ย?" (Where is the elephant?).
- Age 4-5: sort toy animals into farm, zoo and sea groups, naming each one.
- Age 5-6: find the animal letters on the alphabet chart: ช ช้าง, ต เต่า, ล ลิง.
Thai counts animals with the classifier ตัว (tua): แมว สอง ตัว (two cats). Use it naturally while counting toys.
After five minutes of play, find real animals: a soi cat, a gecko on the wall, fish at the market. Naming real animals makes the words stick.
Dog, cat, elephant: quick answers
Dog in Thai is หมา (ma), also said politely as สุนัข. Cat in Thai is แมว (maeo). Elephant in Thai is ช้าง (chang). Tiger in Thai is เสือ, monkey in Thai is ลิง, fish in Thai is ปลา and bird is นก, as in นกฮูก (owl), the last letter of the alphabet.
For heritage and bilingual families

How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: thai words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
