Gujarati for children: a quick guide for parents
Gujarati is the language of Gujarat, spoken by more than 55 million people, and one of the great diaspora languages of the world. Gujarati families have lived for generations in the UK (especially Leicester and London), the USA, Canada, East Africa, Australia and the Gulf, and many parents there want their children to talk with grandparents in their own language. Gujarati script comes from the same family as Devanagari, but it has no line on top of the letters, so ક looks like क without its roof. Children who know Hindi letters find Gujarati surprisingly easy to read.

How Gujarati is taught to young children
In Gujarat, children usually learn the કક્કો first, the consonants ક ખ ગ ઘ, chanted with a picture word: ક કમળનો ક, ખ ખડિયાનો ખ, ગ ગણપતિનો ગ. Then come the vowels, સ્વર, and after that the બારાખડી (bārākhaḍī), where each consonant joins each vowel sign: ક કા કિ કી કુ કૂ. By class 1, most children read simple words like ઘર (house) and કમળ (lotus). Before that, the heart of early Gujarati is talk, બાળગીત (children's songs) and stories, વાર્તા.

Ten minutes of Gujarati a day
- Greet in Gujarati. કેમ છો? (how are you?) and મજામાં (I'm fine) are the classic pair.
- One small set a week. Five fruits or five animals is plenty for a three-year-old.
- Play, then look around. After a round of Find it, point to real things in the kitchen or garden.
- Praise the effort. શાબાશ! or સરસ! (well done, lovely).
- Festival words. At Navratri talk about garba; at Uttarayan, count પતંગ (kites) in the sky.
Gujarati for diaspora and bilingual families
For many families abroad, Gujarati lives at the dinner table and on calls with Ba and Dada. Keep it there: speak Gujarati at meals and bedtime, sing the songs you grew up with, and do not worry if your child answers in English at first. Understanding always comes before speaking. Weekend Gujarati classes in temples and community centres in the UK, US and Canada teach the kakko in the same order used here, so these games make good home practice. If your child also learns Hindi, compare the Hindi varnamala: most letters match, minus the top line.
Screen time: keep sessions short and play together. Children under two learn far more from a grown-up talking about real things than from any screen.

Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: gujarati words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
