You can learn Thai for kids here in short, playful sessions, whether you are a Thai family living abroad, a mixed family, or new to the language. Every game speaks each word aloud in Thai and English, shows a big picture, and gives grown-ups a romanized spelling so you can join in. Thai is a tonal language with its own beautiful script, and young children, who copy melody naturally, often find the tones easier than adults do.
What your child can learn here
The Thai hub has seven games, each on its own page:
- Thai alphabet for kids: all 44 consonants, from ก ไก่ (ko kai, chicken) to ฮ นกฮูก (ho nokhuk, owl), each with its picture.
- Numbers in Thai 1 to 100: หนึ่ง สอง สาม (nueng, song, sam) up to หนึ่งร้อย (nueng roi), plus Thai numerals ๑ ๒ ๓.
- Animals in Thai: 60 animals from ช้าง (chang, elephant) to ม้าน้ำ (ma nam, seahorse).
- Fruits in Thai and vegetables in Thai: 30 of each, from มะม่วง (mamuang, mango) to พริก (phrik, chilli).
- Colours in Thai: 12 colours, each starting with สี (si, colour).
- Body parts in Thai: 30 words from หัว (hua, head) to นิ้วเท้า (nio thao, toes).
Every game ends with a marble for Golu's Goli Jar. The language button in the header lets you pick Thai first, English first or one language only. Nothing to install, no sign-up.
Thai tones: why listening comes first
Thai has five tones: mid, low, falling, high and rising. The same syllable can mean different things with a different tone; ม้า (má, high tone) is a horse and หมา (mǎa, rising tone) is a dog. Romanized spellings on this site do not show tones, so the clear audio is your best guide. Tap a word two or three times and copy the melody, just as Thai babies do. Children under six usually pick up tones by ear without ever learning the rules.
How to learn Thai for kids at home
- Listen and point (2-3 years). Tap pictures together and say each word once. Start with things your child loves: หมา (dog), แมว (maeo, cat), กล้วย (kluai, banana).
- Find it (3-4 years). Golu asks "แมว อยู่ไหนเอ่ย?" (Where is the cat?) and your child taps the picture.
- Say it in routines (4-5 years). Use Thai at set times: สวัสดี (sawatdi, hello) with a wai, ขอบคุณ (khop khun, thank you), กินข้าว (kin khao, let's eat).
- First letters (5-6 years). Chant ก ไก่, ข ไข่, ค ควาย and find the letters of your child's name on the Thai alphabet chart.
Five to ten minutes a day, playing together, is plenty. Children under two learn far more from your voice, songs and real objects than from a screen.
Politeness: the wai, khrap and kha
Thai children learn to greet elders with a wai: palms pressed together, a small bow, and สวัสดีครับ (said by boys and men) or สวัสดีค่ะ (said by girls and women). These polite endings, ครับ (khrap) and ค่ะ (kha), go at the end of many sentences. Teaching the wai with a grandparent on a video call is a warm first step into Thai culture.
Thai culture for kids: festivals and special days
| When | Festival | Words to try |
|---|---|---|
| Second Saturday of January | Children's Day วันเด็ก | outings, ของขวัญ (present) |
| 13-15 April | Songkran สงกรานต์, Thai New Year | น้ำ (nam, water), pouring water on elders' hands for blessings |
| 12 August | Mother's Day วันแม่ | jasmine garlands, แม่ (mae, mother) |
| November full moon | Loy Krathong ลอยกระทง | floating baskets with candles and flowers, ดอกไม้ (flowers) |
Songkran is the most famous: children splash water in the streets and gently pour scented water over the hands of elders to show respect. Loy Krathong is a lovely craft: make a small floating basket from leaves or bread, decorate it with flowers and name each colour in Thai with the colours in Thai game.
Tips for heritage and diaspora Thai families
Thai families live all over the world, and many children understand Thai but answer in English. That is normal. A few ideas that help:
- Temple weekend classes. Many Thai temples abroad run weekend Thai language classes; play the same topic here in the week.
- Food is language. Thai food is a daily chance to use Thai: ข้าว (rice), มะม่วง (mango), ไข่ (egg).
- Grandparents lead. On video calls, let ยาย or ย่า ask for the picture while your child taps.
- Thai only, sometimes. Use the Thai-only setting for bedtime play, and English first while words are new.
Thai flash cards and worksheets you can print
There is no PDF download, but each vocabulary page has a word list with pictures, the Thai word, romanization and a sound button. Print it from your browser for Thai flash cards, a matching game or a wall chart. The ก ไก่ chart prints cleanly too.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: thai words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
