The Gujarati alphabet for kids is usually called the કક્કો (kakko), after its first letter . On this page each letter has a picture word, the way children chant it in school: ક કમળનો ક ("ka for lotus"), ખ ખડિયાનો ખ ("kha for inkpot"), ગ ગણપતિનો ગ ("ga for Ganesha"). Tap a card to hear the letter and its word in clear audio, then play Find it and let Golu ask for letters one by one.

How many letters are in the Gujarati kakko?

The answer depends on what you count, which is why parents search for it so often. This page has 46 cards: 34 consonants, વ્યંજન (vyañjan), from to જ્ઞ, and 12 vowels, સ્વર (svar), from to અં. Some charts add and , rare nasal letters that almost never start a word, or અઃ and ઍ ઑ among the vowels, giving counts from 46 to over 50. Follow your child's school book; the letters themselves are the same.

ક્ષ (kṣa) and જ્ઞ (gna) are joined letters that are traditionally taught at the end of the kakko, and is a special Gujarati "l" sound, heard in નળ (tap) and કમળ (lotus).

The kakko order and the picture chant

The consonants are grouped by where the sound is made in the mouth, five at a time: ક ખ ગ ઘ from the throat, ચ છ જ ઝ from the palate, ટ ઠ ડ ઢ ણ with the tongue curled back, ત થ દ ધ ન at the teeth and પ ફ બ ભ મ at the lips. Then come ય ર લ વ શ ષ સ હ ળ ક્ષ જ્ઞ. The picture words on the cards follow the familiar Gujarati chart: ચકલી (sparrow), છત્રી (umbrella), ઢોલ (dhol drum), તરબૂચ (watermelon), પતંગ (kite), મોર (peacock), સસલું (rabbit) and હરણ (deer).

From swar to barakhadi

After the consonants, children learn the 12 vowels: અ આ ઇ ઈ ઉ ઊ ઋ એ ઐ ઓ ઔ અં. Each vowel also has a small sign, માત્રા (mātrā), that attaches to a consonant. Putting every consonant with every sign gives the બારાખડી (bārākhaḍī, "twelve lines"):

Most children start the barakhadi around 5, once they know the kakko well. Our Hindi barakhadi grid follows exactly the same pattern, which helps children learning both languages.

Gujarati and Hindi letters

Gujarati letters are close cousins of Devanagari. The biggest visible difference is that Gujarati has no shirorekha, the line along the top. Several letters are almost identical without it, like and , and . A few look different, such as (), () and (). If your child reads the Hindi varnamala, play "spot the twin" with the two charts side by side.

How to teach the kakko at home

  1. Chant it. ક કમળનો ક, ખ ખડિયાનો ખ: rhythm makes letters stick.
  2. One row a week. Learn ક ખ ગ ઘ first, then the next group.
  3. Letter hunt. Find on a packet of khakhra or a shop sign.
  4. Trace big. Draw letters in sand, flour or with a wet finger. Gujarati letters are rounded and fun to trace.
  5. Print this page. The kakko chart prints cleanly from your browser for a wall poster or colouring.

Start with the letters in your child's name. " for Riya, for Aarav": children love finding their own letters.

What to expect by age

At 3-4, children listen, chant and know 5-10 letters with pictures. At 4-5, they recognise most of the kakko and the first sound of familiar words. At 5-6, they learn the vowel signs, read barakhadi syllables and short words like ઘર and કમળ. Keep sessions to five or ten minutes, and stop while your child still wants more.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: gujarati words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.

Gujarati Alphabet: questions parents ask

How many letters are in the Gujarati kakko?
This page shows 34 consonants and 12 vowels, 46 in all. Some charts add rare letters like ઙ and ઞ or extra vowels, so counts vary from 46 to about 52.
What is the difference between kakko and barakhadi?
Kakko is the alphabet itself, mainly the consonants. Barakhadi joins each consonant with each vowel sign: ક કા કિ કી કુ કૂ and so on.
What are swar and vyanjan in Gujarati?
Swar (સ્વર) are the vowels, such as અ આ ઇ ઈ. Vyanjan (વ્યંજન) are the consonants, such as ક ખ ગ ઘ.
Why does Gujarati have no line on top?
Gujarati developed a flowing, handwriting-style script without the shirorekha used in Hindi. Many letters are otherwise very similar.
At what age should a child learn the Gujarati alphabet?
Chanting the kakko works from 3. Most children recognise letters at 4-5 and begin the barakhadi at 5-6.
Is there a Gujarati kakko PDF or worksheet?
There is no PDF, but you can print this page from your browser. The chart is good for tracing and colouring.
