The word list above has all 12 colours with pronunciations for grown-ups. The Malayalam word for colour is നിറം (niram), and colours are നിറങ്ങൾ (nirangal).
Start with four colours
Most children learn colour names between ages 2 and 4, and they learn a few at a time. Begin with four bold ones: ചുവപ്പ് (chuvappu, red), മഞ്ഞ (manja, yellow), നീല (neela, blue) and പച്ച (pacha, green). Add കറുപ്പ് (karuppu, black) and വെള്ള (vella, white) next. Then the rest: ഓറഞ്ച് (oranch, orange), വയലറ്റ് (vayalett, purple), പിങ്ക് (pink), തവിട്ട് (thavittu, brown), ചാരനിറം (chaaraniram, grey) and ആകാശനീല (aakaashaneela, sky blue).
A few of these are borrowed from English, like orange and pink, and everyday Malayalam uses them freely. Grey is "ash colour", from ചാരം (chaaram, ash), and sky blue is simply "sky" plus "blue". Children like hearing how words are built.
Using colours in little sentences
In Malayalam, a colour often changes a little when it describes a thing. Red is ചുവപ്പ്, but a red flower is ചുവന്ന പൂവ് (chuvanna poovu). Black is കറുപ്പ്, but a black cat is കറുത്ത പൂച്ച (karutha poocha). White becomes വെളുത്ത (velutha). You do not need to explain grammar to a four-year-old; just use both forms naturally and your child will pick up the pattern. Other colours, like പച്ച and മഞ്ഞ, stay the same: പച്ച ഇല, a green leaf.
The colours of Kerala
- Green. Paddy fields, coconut palms and backwaters: Kerala is famously പച്ച.
- Gold and white. The kasavu saree and mundu, cream-white cloth with a gold border, are worn at Onam and weddings.
- Yellow. കൊന്നപ്പൂവ് (konnappoovu), the bright yellow golden shower flower, is the state flower and must be in the Vishu kani.
- Every colour. The Onam പൂക്കളം (pookkalam) is a flower carpet laid in rings of colour, growing bigger each of the ten days.
Making a small pookkalam at home, even with paper petals, is a perfect colour lesson. Ask your child for "മഞ്ഞ petals here, ചുവപ്പ് petals there", and name each ring as you go.
Colour games for home
- I spy in Malayalam. "I spy something നീല." Take turns.
- Sort the laundry. Put socks into colour piles and name each pile.
- Fruit colours. മഞ്ഞ banana, പച്ച guava, ചുവപ്പ് apple. See fruits in Malayalam and vegetables in Malayalam.
- Colouring. Print a picture from the colouring pages and ask for each crayon in Malayalam.
If your child mixes up blue and green, that is very common at this age, in any language. Keep naming them happily. If you have wider concerns about eyesight or colour vision, talk to your paediatrician.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: malayalam words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
