Kerala's own fruits
Kerala is green and wet, and its fruits are part of every childhood there. Three stand out.
ചക്ക (chakka), jackfruit. The official state fruit of Kerala since 2018. A single jackfruit can weigh more than a small child! Families eat it ripe and sweet, cook raw chakka as a curry, and fry chakka chips. It is also the word for ച on the Malayalam alphabet chart.
പഴം (pazham), banana. In Malayalam, pazham means ripe fruit in general, and in daily talk it usually means a banana. Kerala has many varieties, from the long nendran used for chips and steamed pazham to small sweet poovan and red bananas. Say പഴം slowly: it has the special ഴ (zha) sound, just like മഴ (rain).
തേങ്ങ (thenga), coconut. "Kerala" is often linked to kera, the coconut palm. Coconut goes into almost every Kerala dish, and children see it grated, as milk and as oil.
Ten fruits to start with
Pick fruits your child eats. A good first set: മാങ്ങ (maanga, mango), പഴം (pazham, banana), ആപ്പിൾ (aappil, apple), ഓറഞ്ച് (oranch, orange), മുന്തിരി (munthiri, grapes), തണ്ണിമത്തൻ (thannimathan, watermelon), പപ്പായ (pappaaya, papaya), പേരയ്ക്ക (peraykka, guava), കൈതച്ചക്ക (kaithachakka, pineapple) and ചക്ക (chakka, jackfruit). Notice how pineapple is "screwpine jackfruit" and custard apple is ആത്തച്ചക്ക (aathachakka): children enjoy spotting the "chakka" hiding in the longer words.
Fruits children meet in the Gulf and abroad
If your family lives in the UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia, ഈന്തപ്പഴം (eenthappazham, dates) is probably a daily fruit, and it is a lovely long word to clap out in syllables. In the UK or US, your child may know സ്ട്രോബെറി, ബ്ലൂബെറി and കിവി well; Malayalam simply borrows these names from English. Pair them with the older Kerala names grandparents use, like നെല്ലിക്ക (nellikka, Indian gooseberry) and ഞാവൽപ്പഴം (njaavalppazham, java plum), so your child knows both worlds.
Fruits at Onam and Vishu
At Onam, the sadya on a banana leaf ends with pazham, often eaten mashed into sweet payasam. At Vishu, the കണി (kani) arranged for the family to see first on Vishu morning includes a golden cucumber, മാങ്ങ, ചക്ക, പഴം and a halved coconut. Before the festival, ask your child to help place the fruit and name each one in Malayalam.
Fruit games at home
- Market hunt. At the shop or the Kerala store abroad, ask "Where is the മുന്തിരി?" just like Golu does.
- Colour sort. Sort fruits by colour, naming both: മഞ്ഞ പഴം (yellow banana), പച്ച മുന്തിരി (green grapes). See colours in Malayalam.

- Feel bag. Hide a fruit in a cloth bag; your child feels it and guesses the name.
