How young children learn Ukrainian
In Ukrainian homes, language starts with lullabies (колискові), clapping rhymes and folk tales. Toddlers play "Ладки, ладки", clapping palms together, and "Сорока-ворона", a finger game about a magpie feeding her chicks. Favourite tales include Рукавичка (The Mitten), where one forest animal after another squeezes into a lost mitten, and Колобок, the runaway bun. These stories repeat words and patterns, which is exactly how young children learn.
At school, first graders learn with a буквар (first reading book). They learn letter sounds and quickly read by syllables (читання по складах): МА-МА, ТА-ТО, ЛИ-СА. Ukrainian spelling is close to how words sound, and unstressed vowels keep their clear sound, so once a child can blend syllables, reading moves fast.

How to use these Ukrainian games
Start in Listen mode: your child taps pictures and hears each word in Ukrainian, then English. When a few words feel familiar, switch to Find it, where Golu, our glass-marble mascot, asks for a picture. A wrong tap is never called wrong; the game names what was tapped and gently shows the answer. Each round ends with a marble in the Goli Jar, which you can count together: один, два, три.
Short and often works best: five minutes a day, then put the screen away and look for the real thing, a real яблуко, a real кіт, a real red ball. Children under 2 learn far more from you and real objects than from any screen.
Ukrainian is its own language
Ukrainian and Russian both use Cyrillic letters, but they are separate languages with different alphabets, sounds and many different everyday words. A cat is кіт in Ukrainian, a watermelon is кавун, a strawberry is полуниця, and "dad" is тато. Ukrainian vocabulary also shares many words with Polish and Belarusian. Tips for Ukrainian families abroad
Many Ukrainian children now grow up in Poland, Germany, the UK, Canada, the US and elsewhere, going to school in another language. These habits help keep Ukrainian warm and alive:
- Keep one routine in Ukrainian, such as bedtime stories or breakfast.
- Video calls with бабуся and дідусь. Grandparents can play "find it" with toys on camera.
- Saturday school. Many communities run weekend Ukrainian schools and clubs.
- Sing. Lullabies and folk songs carry language and comfort together.
- No pressure. If your child answers in the school language, reply warmly in Ukrainian and keep going.

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: ukrainian words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
