Fruits name in Ukrainian is a sweet, hands-on topic: children can see, smell, hold and taste every word. This page has 30 fruits with pictures and clear audio, from everyday яблуко (apple), груша (pear) and банан to summer favourites like кавун (watermelon), полуниця (strawberry) and вишня (cherry). Tap a picture to hear the Ukrainian name, then the English one, and play Find it when your child is ready.
Everyday fruits in Ukrainian
Begin with what is in your fruit bowl: яблуко, груша, банан, апельсин (orange), лимон and виноград (grapes). The first and last letters of the Ukrainian alphabet have fruit in them too: the Ukrainian alphabet cards start with А – ананас (pineapple) and finish with Я – яблуко. The green apple card is зелене яблуко, a neat way to link fruit and colour.
Orchards, cherries and summer berries
Fruit trees are part of many Ukrainian childhoods. A cherry orchard, вишневий садок, beside a small white house is a classic image in Ukrainian poetry and painting, and children often pick вишня and слива (plum) straight from the tree. Summer brings полуниця (strawberry), лохина (blueberry) and персик (peach), and late summer means a big striped кавун and a fragrant диня (melon). The south of Ukraine is well known for its watermelons.
A word to notice: strawberry in Ukrainian is полуниця, a completely different word from Russian клубника. Watermelon is кавун (Russian арбуз). If your family uses both languages, compare with fruits in Russian.
Tropical fruits in Ukrainian
Many tropical fruits have names close to English or Hindi, which is a quick win for families in India or other warm countries: манго, папая, гуава, ананас, ківі, кокос, лічі. Some are rare in Ukraine and keep borrowed names on our cards, like джекфрут, джамун and амла. Custard apple is черимоя, and dates are фініки. The fig, інжир, starts with the Ukrainian letter І, good practice for that special letter.
| Colour | Fruits on this page |

| жовтий (yellow) | банан, лимон, ананас, манго |
| зелений (green) | ківі, лайм, зелене яблуко, гуава |
| оранжевий (orange) | апельсин, папая, персик |
| фіолетовий (purple) | слива, виноград, лохина, джамун |
One fruit, many fruits
Ukrainian changes the ending for plurals: банан → банани, груша → груші, слива → сливи, яблуко → яблука. Children learn this simply by hearing it. Count real fruit together, "одне яблуко, два яблука", and the pattern takes care of itself.
Fruit in Ukrainian songs, poems and games
Fruit shows up in children's rhymes and playground games, which makes the words stick. Many families read short poems about apples and pears at bedtime, and the cherry orchard appears in songs sung across generations. Make up your own tiny rhyme together, like "Яблуко червоне, груша жовта" ("The apple is red, the pear is yellow"), and clap along.
Fruit games at home and at the market
- Fruit bowl Find it. Put three fruits on the table and ask "Де груша?" ("Where is the pear?").
- Mystery bag. Hide a fruit in a bag; your child feels it and guesses its name.
- Taste test. солодкий (sweet) or кислий (sour)? A lemon always gets a laugh.
- Market helper. At the shop, ask your child to find банани or яблука.
- Cook together. Many families make компот (a fruit drink) and варення (jam). Let your child drop in the fruit and name each one.
Worksheet idea: print this page from your browser and let your child tick the fruits they tried this week.
Tips for Ukrainian families abroad
Snack time is an easy daily Ukrainian moment. Offer a choice, "Хочеш яблуко чи банан?" ("Do you want an apple or a banana?"), so your child says the word instead of just hearing it. If they answer in English or Polish, repeat the Ukrainian word warmly and hand over the fruit. On video calls, grandparents can show fruit from their garden. At 2-3, five fruit names is a great start; at 3-4, 10-15 names and colours; at 5-6, short words to read like ківі, лайм, кокос. Continue with vegetables in Ukrainian or the English and Hindi fruits name page.

How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: ukrainian words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
