Numbers in Punjabi ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ 1 to 100

Numbers in Punjabi are easy to start and fun to finish. The first ten, ਇੱਕ, ਦੋ, ਤਿੰਨ (ikk, do, tinn) and on to ਦਸ (das), are short and bouncy. Punjabi counting 1 to 10 with Gurmukhi numerals

Zero is ਸਿਫ਼ਰ (sifar), and the Gurmukhi numeral is ੦. Notice that ਪੰਜ (five) is the "panj" in Punjab, the land of five rivers.

Why Punjabi numbers 11 to 99 need patience

Unlike English, where "twenty-one" is simply "twenty" plus "one", Punjabi numbers above ten each have their own word. Eleven to twenty go ਗਿਆਰਾਂ, ਬਾਰਾਂ, ਤੇਰਾਂ, ਚੌਦਾਂ, ਪੰਦਰਾਂ, ਸੋਲਾਂ, ਸਤਾਰਾਂ, ਅਠਾਰਾਂ, ਉੱਨੀ, ਵੀਹ. There are patterns, though, and pointing them out helps older children:

• Numbers just before a ten start with ਉਣ or ਉਨ, meaning "one less": ਉਣੱਤੀ (29), ਉਨਤਾਲੀ (39), ਉਣੰਜਾ (49).
• The ones digit is hiding at the front: ਇਕਤਾਲੀ (41) begins like ਇੱਕ, ਬਤਾਲੀ (42) like "ba" for two.
• Ninety-nine is its own lovely word, ਨੜਿੰਨਵੇਂ (narrinven), just before ਸੌ.

Punjabi and Hindi ginti are close cousins, so ਪੱਚੀ (25) sounds much like पच्चीस. If your family uses Hindi too, the Hindi ginti page is a helpful partner.

How to teach Punjabi counting at home

Real objects beat screens for counting. Count marbles into the Goli Jar, peas into a bowl or kinnow segments at snack time, then check the number on the chart.

Where your child will see Gurmukhi numerals

Gurmukhi numerals appear on gurdwara hymn books, calendars, older shop signs in Punjab and the page numbers of Punjabi books. Many Punjabi schools teach them alongside everyday digits. If your family visits a gurdwara, look for ੧ together: the symbol ੴ (Ik Onkar) that opens the Mool Mantar begins with the numeral ੧.

Keeping counting low-pressure

Skipping a number is normal at every age. Just count again together, slowly, touching each object. Praise the effort, not the total. For children with speech delay, let them point while you say the word. Keep screen time short and shared. If you have any worries about development, talk to your paediatrician. How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: punjabi words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
