Fruits name in Punjabi by colour
Sorting fruits by colour teaches two sets of words at once. Pair this table with the colours in Punjabi game.
| Colour | Fruits | Say it |
|---|---|---|

Children enjoy that the colour ਜਾਮਨੀ (purple) comes from the fruit ਜਾਮਣ, and ਸੰਤਰੀ (orange colour) from ਸੰਤਰਾ.
10 fruits name in Punjabi for little ones
For a toddler, or a quick homework list, begin with fruits your child already eats: ਸੇਬ (apple), ਕੇਲਾ (banana), ਅੰਬ (mango), ਸੰਤਰਾ (orange), ਅੰਗੂਰ (grapes), ਹਦਵਾਣਾ (watermelon), ਪਪੀਤਾ (papaya), ਅਮਰੂਦ (guava), ਅਨਾਰ (pomegranate) and ਨਿੰਬੂ (lemon). The Punjabi word for watermelon, ਹਦਵਾਣਾ, is different from Hindi, so even Hindi-speaking parents learn something new here.
Fruits through the Punjab year
Punjab's markets change with the seasons, and so can your word of the week.
- Winter: kinnow, a juicy local citrus, piles up on carts. Call it ਸੰਤਰਾ in the game, and teach "kinnow" at the market. Guava, ਅਮਰੂਦ, and amla, ਔਲਾ, are also in season.
- Summer: ਅੰਬ, ਹਦਵਾਣਾ, ਖ਼ਰਬੂਜ਼ਾ (muskmelon) and ਲੀਚੀ bring the heat-time treats.
- Monsoon: the purple ਜਾਮਣ stains little fingers and tongues, which makes it very memorable.
Lohri in January comes with peanuts and sweets, while Vaisakhi in April marks the wheat harvest. Dried fruit like ਖਜੂਰ (dates) and ਅੰਜੀਰ (figs) is shared at festivals and in winter.
How to teach fruit names in Punjabi, in five minutes a day
- Snack-time naming (ages 2-3). Before each bite, say the Punjabi name. Let your child hold, smell and taste the fruit.
- Market game (ages 3-4). At the shop, ask your child to find the ਕੇਲਾ. Abroad, the supermarket works just as well.
- Find it with the fruit bowl (ages 4-5). Play Find it on screen, then do the same with the real bowl.
- Letter link (ages 5-6). ਸ for ਸੇਬ, ਕ for ਕੇਲਾ, ਅ for ਅਨਾਰ, all from the Punjabi alphabet game.
Cut a fruit in half and ask what is inside: seeds, a stone, or juice. New words like ਬੀਜ (seed) and ਮਿੱਠਾ (sweet) come naturally.
Fruit words for Punjabi families abroad
In Canada, the UK, the US or Australia, your child may see blueberries and kiwis more often than ਜਾਮਣ or ਸ਼ਰੀਫ਼ਾ (custard apple). Both are in the game, so use what is in your fridge first and treat the rest as a story about Punjab. Indian grocery shops in Surrey, Brampton and other cities often stock guava, chikoo and dates, which makes a fun outing for a word hunt.
Getting the most from the fruit game
Start in Listen mode and let your child tap freely; there is nothing to get right. When they begin to name a few fruits, switch to Find it. Golu asks for a fruit in Punjabi, and your child picks from two to four big pictures. A wrong tap simply names the fruit that was touched, then the right one glows, so your child learns from every tap. Memory mode is a calm way to end: turn over cards, match pairs, and hear each name again. Each finished round adds a marble to the Goli Jar. Count the marbles together in Punjabi, ਇੱਕ, ਦੋ, ਤਿੰਨ, for a bonus counting lesson.
Gentle tips
If your child says "apple" instead of ਸੇਬ, that is a win, not a mistake: they know the fruit, and the Punjabi word will follow. Mixing languages is normal in bilingual homes. For picky eaters, naming and touching fruit without pressure to eat it can help curiosity grow. Keep screen play short, sit alongside, and for any worries about eating or speech, talk to your paediatrician. Next, try vegetables name in Punjabi, the English and Hindi fruits name page, or return to learn Punjabi for kids.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: punjabi words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
