If you want to learn Punjabi for kids at home, start here. Your child taps a picture, hears the Punjabi word and the English word in a clear recorded computer voice, and plays short matching games with no reading needed. Behind the games sit the building blocks: the Gurmukhi letters called ਪੈਂਤੀ ਅੱਖਰੀ, counting from 1 to 100, and first words for animals, fruits, vegetables, colours and body parts. Everything is free, needs no sign-up, shows no ads and runs in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
What is inside this Punjabi corner
There are seven Punjabi pages, and each one opens with a game in three modes. Listen lets your child tap anything and hear it. Find it asks for a word in Punjabi and shows two to four big pictures. Memory is a gentle pairs game. On these pages the game always speaks Punjabi and English, whatever the language button in the header says, so grandparents and children hear the same words.

What is Gurmukhi, and what about Shahmukhi?
Punjabi is written in two scripts. In India, and in most gurdwaras and Punjabi schools abroad, it is written in Gurmukhi, a script standardised by Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Sikh Guru, in the sixteenth century. In Pakistan, Punjabi is usually written in Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script that runs right to left. The spoken language is largely shared. This site teaches Gurmukhi only, so if your family reads Shahmukhi, the audio and pictures will still help, but the letters will look different from the ones at home.
Gurmukhi letters hang from a line along the top, much like Hindi, which helps children who already know Hindi varnamala. The order is different, though. Gurmukhi starts with ੳ ਅ ੲ ਸ ਹ, and children recite the 35 letters in rows of five.
How to teach Punjabi to kids at home, step by step
- Talk first (ages 2-3). Use Punjabi for daily routines: ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀ ਲੈ (drink water), ਹੱਥ ਧੋ ਲੈ (wash your hands). Name animals and food in the Listen mode together.
- Play and point (ages 3-4). Use Find it on the animals and fruits pages. Then point to real fruit in the kitchen and ask, ਇਹ ਕੀ ਹੈ? (what is this?).
- Letters and counting (ages 4-5). Recite the first row of ਪੈਂਤੀ as a chant, and count stairs in Punjabi.
- Vowel signs and short words (ages 5-6). Move on to ਲਗਾਂ ਮਾਤਰਾਂ with the ਮੁਹਾਰਨੀ chant, ਕ ਕਾ ਕਿ ਕੀ, and read two-letter words together.
Five to ten minutes a day works better than one long weekend session. Stop while your child still wants more.
Punjabi sounds, including a gentle tone
Punjabi is a tonal language, which surprises many parents. Letters such as ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ are no longer breathy in most speech. Instead they change the pitch of the syllable. So ਘੋੜਾ (horse) is said with a low rising tone, not a hard "gh". Children pick this up by ear far more easily than adults, which is one reason listening games help. Do not drill it. Just let your child hear the words often.
Punjabi for kids in Canada, the UK, the US and Australia
Many families searching for Punjabi for kids online live outside Punjab: in Surrey and Brampton in Canada, in UK cities, across the US, and in Australia. Many gurdwaras run Punjabi classes on weekends, where children learn ਪੈਂਤੀ, prayers and songs. This site does not replace those classes. It gives your child a way to hear and play with the same words on the other six days of the week. Grandparents on a video call can join in: ask them to say the word before the game does.
In homes where parents speak English to each other, try a "Punjabi corner" of the day, such as bath time or breakfast, when everyone uses Punjabi words. Children learning two languages may mix them for a while. That is normal and not a delay.
Punjab for kids: festivals, food and fields
Words stick when they belong to real life. Punjab is a land of wheat and mustard fields. In winter families eat ਸਰ੍ਹੋਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਗ with ਮੱਕੀ ਦੀ ਰੋਟੀ, and kinnow oranges fill the markets. Lohri in January brings a bonfire, peanuts and songs. Vaisakhi, the harvest festival in April, brings bhangra and giddha dancing. Gurpurab days and the shared meal of langar at the gurdwara teach children about seva and sharing. Each festival is a chance to use the words from these pages.
