States of matter for kids sounds like a big textbook phrase, but a four-year-old already knows the idea: ice is hard, water splashes, and steam floats away from a pot of hot tea. This page lets your child see all three in one short story. They tap Heat and an ice cube melts into water; they tap again and the water boils into steam; then they tap Cool and hear how steam turns back into drops and water freezes back into ice. A second game asks them to sort a stone, a spoon, milk, honey, juice, a balloon and the wind into solid, liquid or gas, with every word spoken in Hindi and English: solid (ठोस), liquid (द्रव) and gas (गैस).
What are solids, liquids and gases?
Everything around us is made of matter, and most of it comes in three forms. Here is how to explain each one in words a small child can hold on to:
- Solid (ठोस): keeps its own shape. You can hold it and stack it. A stone, a spoon, a book and an ice cube are solids.
- Liquid (द्रव): flows and takes the shape of its container. You can pour it. Water, milk, juice, oil and honey are liquids. Honey flows slowly, but it still flows.
- Gas (गैस): spreads out to fill any space. Most gases are invisible. The air inside a balloon is a gas, wind is moving air, and steam is water as a gas.
The magic idea is that water can be all three. Freeze it and it becomes ice, a solid. Warm the ice and it melts into water, a liquid. Heat the water until it boils and it turns into steam, a gas. Cool the steam and it turns back into water drops, which you can see on the lid of a cooking pot.

How to use this page
There are two games in the tabs at the top:
- Ice to steam: a big button says Heat. Each tap moves the story on: ice, then water, then steam rising from the pan, then Cool. The speech bubble and the voice explain each step. At the end the game reminds your child that only a grown-up heats water, because steam is very hot.
- Solid or liquid? A picture appears with three big buttons: Solid, Liquid and Gas. At ages 2-3 (or with "fewer choices" on in Settings) only two buttons appear. A wrong tap never buzzes. The first time, Golu repeats the question; the second time the right button glows; the third time a pointing hand shows it.
Each game ends with a marble for your child's Goli Jar and a real-world mission. Use the अ+A button to choose Hindi first, English first or just one language, and turn on calm motion if moving pictures distract your child.
What happens when ice melts?
Ice is water that has become so cold it turns solid. When it warms up, it melts and becomes liquid water again. Nothing is lost; the same water just changes form. Children find this surprising, so let them see it for real:
- Put two ice cubes on two plates. Keep one in the shade and one in the sun (or near a warm window).
- Ask, "Which one will melt first?" Let your child guess. There is no wrong guess.
- Check every five minutes together. Talk about what you see: "It is getting smaller. There is water on the plate."
- At the end, put the water in the freezer and check it the next morning. It is ice again!
Keep heating experiments for grown-ups only. Children can watch steam from a safe distance, for example the steam from a kettle or the drops that form on a steel lid, but they should never touch boiling water or steam.
Easy kitchen science: solids, liquids and gases at home
The Indian kitchen is full of states of matter. Point them out while you cook:
- Ghee and butter: solid in the fridge, liquid in a warm pan. Let your child see a spoon of ghee melt.
- Chai time: the milk is a liquid, the steam rising from the cup is water as a gas, and the sugar cubes are solids that dissolve.
- Kulfi and ice lollies: make a simple ice lolly from juice. Liquid goes in, solid comes out. Then watch it melt on a hot day.
- Balloons: blow up a balloon and let your child feel the air rush out. "We can't see air, but it is a gas, and it fills the balloon."
- Pouring play: in the bath or with a bucket, pour water into a cup, a bowl and a bottle. The water takes each shape. A block does not.

Gentle tips for every child
Science at this age is about noticing and wondering, not getting a score. Ask "What do you think will happen?" and praise the thinking, even when the guess is surprising. If your child gets stuck on gas (it is invisible, after all), stay with solids and liquids for a few weeks and come back later.
Children with a speech delay can show you "solid" by knocking on a table and "liquid" by making a pouring gesture. Autistic children who dislike wet or sticky textures can still watch the melting experiment on a plate without touching it. In a bilingual home, say ठोस and solid together; hearing both is a strength. Keep screen time to a few short minutes with you beside them, then move to the real ice cube. For children under two, playing with a bowl of water and a few ice cubes (with a grown-up watching closely) is better than any game on a screen.
