This page teaches animals name in Odia and English with a big, friendly picture for each one. Sixty animals are here, from the ଗାଈ (cow) in the village yard to the ହାତୀ (elephant) of the Similipal forests and the ଡଲଫିନ୍ (dolphin) of Chilika lake. Your child taps a picture to see the Odia word, then plays Find it, where Golu asks for an animal, or Memory to find the pairs. The full animal chart with pictures, Odia, English and a "say it" guide is in the word list above.
Does the game say the animal names in Odia?
Only when your device can. We do not have recorded Odia audio, because our recorded voice service has no Odia voice. Your phone or tablet speaks the Odia name if it has an Odia (Oriya) voice installed; many Android phones do, in Google or Samsung speech settings, and some other phones, most iPhones and many computers do not. When there is no Odia voice, the English name (cow, tiger, fish) is still spoken, and the Odia script and romanised guide stay on screen for you to read aloud. Try ଗାଈ as "gaaee" and ବାଘ as "baagha".
The 60 animals, group by group
The game mixes animals, but it helps a parent to see them sorted. Teach one group a week.
Farm and home animals (ଘରପାଳିତ ପଶୁ)
Start with what your child can see: ଗାଈ (cow), ଷଣ୍ଢ (bull), ମଇଁଷି (buffalo), ଛେଳି (goat), ମେଣ୍ଢା (sheep), ଘୋଡ଼ା (horse), କୁକୁର (dog) and ବିଲେଇ (cat). These domestic animals are the best first words because a child can point at the real thing.
Wild animals (ବଣୁଆ ପଶୁ)
Next come the forest favourites: ବାଘ (tiger), ସିଂହ (lion), ଭାଲୁ (bear), ମାଙ୍କଡ଼ (monkey), ହରିଣ (deer), ଗଣ୍ଡା (rhino) and ବିଲୁଆ (jackal). Odisha's Similipal is home to tigers and elephants, and the ଗୟଳ (Indian bison) roams forests in eastern India. Small ones children love: ଠେକୁଆ (rabbit), ନେଉଳ (mongoose) and ଗୁଣ୍ଡୁଚି ମୂଷା (squirrel).
Water and sea animals (ଜଳଜନ୍ତୁ)
Odisha has a long coast, so sea words matter: ମାଛ (fish), କଙ୍କଡ଼ା (crab), ଚିଙ୍ଗୁଡ଼ି (prawn), ହାଙ୍ଗର (shark), ତିମି (whale) and ତାରା ମାଛ (starfish). Children laugh at ଜଳହସ୍ତୀ, the hippo, which literally means "water elephant".
Odisha's own animals: stories to tell
- Chilika dolphins: Chilika lake, Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, is famous for Irrawaddy dolphins. Boats take visitors out from Satapada to watch them. Show your child the dolphin card and tell them where it lives.
- Olive Ridley turtles: every winter, huge numbers of sea turtles come ashore at Gahirmatha and Rushikulya to lay eggs. The turtle is not in this game, which makes it a lovely "new word" to add at home.
- Konark: the Sun Temple at Konark has stone horses and elephants carved into its walls. Match them to ଘୋଡ଼ା and ହାତୀ in the game.
- Pattachitra: Odisha's cloth paintings are full of fish, elephants and peacocks. A Pattachitra wall hanging makes a great "find the animal" game.
How to teach animal names in Odia, by age
- Age 2-3: five home animals, with the sound: "ଗାଈ says moo". Use toy animals as much as the screen.
- Age 3-4: ten to twenty animals, sorted into home and forest. Play Find it with two or three choices.
- Age 4-5: sea animals and odd ones like ଝିଙ୍କ (porcupine). Ask "where does it live?".
- Age 5-6: spot first letters: ବ for ବାଘ, ଭ for ଭାଲୁ, ମ for ମାଛ. Link with the Odia alphabet.
Make it physical. Walk like a ହାତୀ, hop like a ବେଙ୍ଗ, swim like a ମାଛ. Movement helps words stick, especially for busy children.
For Odia families outside Odisha
In a US or UK suburb, your child may see squirrels, foxes and ducks more often than buffaloes. That is fine: କୋକିଶିଆଳି (fox) and ଗୁଣ୍ଡୁଚି ମୂଷା (squirrel) are in the game too. On zoo trips in Bengaluru or Hyderabad, say each animal in Odia first and English second. If your child already knows the animals name in English and Hindi, this page adds a third language without extra effort. More Odia games are on learn Odia for kids, and body parts in Odia pairs nicely ("the elephant has a long nose").
Keep sessions short and sit with your child. Under-2s are better off with a grown-up and toy animals than a screen. If a word is hard, just say it again another day; games here never say "wrong", and every round ends with a marble in the Goli Jar. To print the animal chart, use your browser's print option; there is no PDF.
