The Odia alphabet for kids is called the ବର୍ଣ୍ଣମାଳା (barnamala), literally a "garland of letters". This page lets your child meet it the way Odia children always have: one letter, one easy word, one picture. Tap ଆ and you see ଆମ୍ବ, a mango; tap ର and you see ରଥ, the chariot of Rath Yatra. When a few letters feel familiar, switch to Find it and Golu asks for them one at a time, or play Memory to match pairs. It is free, with no sign-up, and your child is never told "wrong".

Will my child hear the Odia letters?

There is no recorded Odia audio on this site, because our recorded voice service has no Odia voice. The Odia letter and word are spoken by your device's own voice if it has an Odia voice installed. Many Android phones do (look under Google or Samsung text-to-speech for Odia or Oriya); some phones, and most iPhones and computers, do not. Without one, the English word is still spoken, and the letter, the Odia word and a romanised "say it" guide stay on screen so you can say them aloud. Please do: a parent saying କ, କଦଳୀ is worth more than any machine.

Odia vowels (ସ୍ୱରବର୍ଣ୍ଣ) with picture words

Children start with the ସ୍ୱରବର୍ଣ୍ଣ (swarabarna), the vowels. These are the same words your child sees in the game.

Odia consonants (ବ୍ୟଞ୍ଜନବର୍ଣ୍ଣ)

Next come the ବ୍ୟଞ୍ଜନବର୍ଣ୍ଣ (byanjanabarna), the consonants, in rows of five, just like Hindi: କ ଖ ଗ ଘ ଙ, ଚ ଛ ଜ ଝ ଞ, ଟ ଠ ଡ ଢ ଣ, ତ ଥ ଦ ଧ ନ, ପ ଫ ବ ଭ ମ, then ଯ ର ଲ ଶ ଷ ସ ହ କ୍ଷ ଳ ୟ. A few favourites from the game: କ for କଦଳୀ (banana), ଗ for ଗାଈ (cow), ଠ for ଠେକୁଆ (rabbit), ଢ for ଢୋଲ (drum), ବ for ବାଘ (tiger) and ଶ for ଶଙ୍ଖ (conch shell). Letters like ଙ, ଞ, ଣ, ଳ and ୟ rarely start a word, so the game shows them inside one: ବେଙ୍ଗ (frog), ପାଞ୍ଚ (five), ହରିଣ (deer), ଜଳ (water) and ନୟନ (eye).

How many letters are in the Odia barnamala?

Charts differ, which is why parents search "odia barnamala ketoti" (how many). Our game uses 11 vowels and 36 consonants, 47 cards in all. Many school charts add the signs ଂ ଃ ଁ, the letters ଡ଼ ଢ଼ and ଵ, so you may see totals from 47 to around 52. None of them is wrong; they simply count differently.

From Barnabodha to barakhadi: the traditional order

For well over a century, Odia children have learned from Barnabodha (ବର୍ଣ୍ଣବୋଧ), the small primer by Madhusudan Rao. Its order is the one teachers still follow: vowels, then consonants, then the ବାରଖଡ଼ି (barakhadi), where each consonant joins the vowel signs (matra). For କ that is କ କା କି କୀ କୁ କୂ କୃ କେ କୈ କୋ କୌ (ka, kaa, ki, kee, ku, koo, kru, ke, kai, ko, kau). Joined letters, the ଯୁକ୍ତାକ୍ଷର such as କ୍ଷ or the ମ୍ବ in ଆମ୍ବ, come last, usually in Class 1 or 2.

Look at the shapes with your child. Most Odia letters sit under a round, umbrella-like top curve. Scholars link this to the palm-leaf writing tradition: straight lines would split a dry leaf, so scribes used curves. Children love tracing these "umbrellas", and a finger in a tray of rice or sand is a great first pencil.

Teaching the Odia letters by age

• Age 3-4: listen and point. Play Listen for a few minutes and say the words aloud. No writing yet.
• Age 4-5: vowels. Play Find it with fewer choices, trace vowels in sand, and hunt for ଅ and ଆ on shop signs and calendars.
• Age 5-6: consonants and the first barakhadi rows. Build words like ଘର (house) and ଖଟ (cot) from letter cards.

Many families begin with Khadi Chhuan (ଖଡ଼ି ଛୁଆଁ), the first-chalk ceremony, often held on Saraswati Puja (Basant Panchami). A child writes the first letter with chalk, guided by a grown-up hand. If you are abroad, a simple home version with a slate and a small prayer is just as meaningful.
