Body parts in Odia are the words a baby hears first, often before "mango" or "cow": ଆଖି (eye), ନାକ (nose), କାନ (ear), sung at bath time and while oiling hair. This page turns those words into a picture game with 30 body parts, from the face to the fingers and even the ହୃଦୟ (heart) and ହାଡ଼ (bones) inside. Tap to learn, play Find it when Golu asks "where is the ear?", then match pairs in Memory. The full chart with a "say it" guide is in the word list above.
How the Odia words are spoken
We do not have recorded Odia audio, because our recorded voice service has no Odia voice. The Odia word is spoken by your device's own voice when an Odia (Oriya) voice is installed. Many Android phones have one in Google or Samsung speech settings; some phones and most iPhones and computers do not. Then the English ("eye", "nose") is still spoken, and the Odia script and romanised guide are shown. For body parts, that is no loss at all: say ଆଖି ("aakhi") yourself and gently touch your child's eyelid. Touch plus your voice teaches better than any speaker.
Head to toe: the 30 words in three groups
Face and head
ମୁଣ୍ଡ (head), ବାଳ (hair), ମୁହଁ (face), ଆଖି (eye), କାନ (ear), ନାକ (nose), ପାଟି (mouth), ଓଠ (lips), ଜିଭ (tongue), ଦାନ୍ତ (teeth), ଗାଲ (cheek) and ଥୋଡ଼ି (chin). These are the best first words for ages 2-3.
Body, arms and legs
ବେକ (neck), କାନ୍ଧ (shoulder), ବାହୁ (arm), କହୁଣୀ (elbow), ହାତ (hand), ଆଙ୍ଗୁଠି (finger), ବୁଢ଼ା ଆଙ୍ଗୁଠି (thumb, literally "old finger"), ନଖ (nail), ପେଟ (tummy), ପିଠି (back), ଆଣ୍ଠୁ (knee), ଗୋଡ଼ (leg), ପାଦ (foot) and ପାଦ ଆଙ୍ଗୁଠି (toe).
Inside the body (ages 5-6)
ମସ୍ତିଷ୍କ (brain), ହୃଦୟ (heart), ଫୁସଫୁସ (lungs) and ହାଡ଼ (bones). Let your child feel their heartbeat after running, and name it: "ହୃଦୟ is beating fast!"
Five body-part games to play in Odia
- Touch and say: you say "ନାକ ଛୁଅଁ" (touch your nose) and your child does it. Swap roles so they give the orders.
- Bath-time song: name each part as you wash it: ହାତ, ଗୋଡ଼, ପିଠି, ପେଟ. Make up a tune; it doesn't need to be a real song.
- Doll doctor: a teddy has a "hurt" ଆଣ୍ଠୁ; your child puts on a pretend plaster and names the part.
- Mirror game: in front of a mirror, point to ଗାଲ, ଥୋଡ଼ି, ଓଠ and pull funny faces.
- Count on the body: two ଆଖି, ten ଆଙ୍ଗୁଠି, one ନାକ. Use the numbers in Odia chart.
Body words are also safety words. Knowing the names of their body parts helps young children tell a trusted grown-up when something hurts or when something doesn't feel right. Keep the tone calm and matter-of-fact.
What to expect at each age
- Age 2-3: points to five or six face parts when you name them; may say a few.
- Age 3-4: names most face and limb words; plays Find it with three choices.
- Age 4-5: knows elbow, knee, shoulder; follows two-step instructions: "ହାତ ଉଠାଅ, ଗୋଡ଼ ହଲାଅ" (raise your hand, shake your leg).
- Age 5-6: curious about the inside of the body; ready for heart, lungs and bones.
Every child is different. If your child is not pointing to any body parts by around two, or you have any worry about hearing or speech, talk to your paediatrician.
For Odia families outside Odisha
Body parts are perfect for keeping Odia alive in Bengaluru, the Gulf or the UK because you need nothing but yourselves. Use Odia for care routines like dressing, bathing and bedtime, even if school and play happen in English. If your child knows the body parts name in English and Hindi, this page adds Odia. For more games, see learn Odia for kids, and try animals in Odia for "the elephant has big କାନ" chats.
Keep screen sessions short and shared; under-2s learn body words far better from your touch than from a screen. Games never say "wrong", and each round adds a marble to the Goli Jar. To print the chart, use your browser's print option; there is no PDF file.
