Vegetables name in Odia is where Odia kitchens shine. Think of dalma, the dal cooked with pumpkin, raw banana, brinjal and papaya that is served at Odia homes and in the Jagannath temple's Mahaprasad. This page teaches 30 of those everyday ପରିବା (vegetables) with a picture, the Odia word and the English. Your child taps to learn, plays Find it when Golu asks "where is the pumpkin?", and matches pairs in Memory. The full chart, with a "say it" guide for each word, is in the word list above.
What you will hear on your device
There is no recorded Odia audio on this site; our recorded voice service simply has no Odia voice. So the Odia word is spoken by your device's own voice, if it has an Odia (Oriya) voice installed. Many Android phones do, through Google or Samsung speech settings; some phones, and most iPhones and computers, do not. If yours has none, the English word is still spoken, and the Odia script and romanised guide are shown so you can read it aloud. ଆଳୁ is simply "aalu", and ବାଇଗଣ is "baaigana".
Odia vegetables sorted by favourite dishes
Linking words to food your child actually eats makes them stick. Here the game's vegetables are grouped by classic Odia dishes.
| Dish | Vegetables in it (Odia · English) |
|---|---|
| Dalma or ghanta | ସଜନା ଛୁଇଁ drumstick, ଲାଉ bottle gourd, କଲରା bitter gourd |
Food varies from home to home, so treat this as a starting point, not a recipe book. Ask your child which vegetables are in tonight's curry, and add your own family's dish.
How to teach vegetable names in Odia at home
Be a kitchen helper (ages 2-4)
Give your child a safe job: washing tomatoes, shelling ମଟର (peas), carrying the ଆଳୁ. Name each vegetable in Odia as it passes through their hands. Touch, smell and weight help memory far more than a screen.
The market game (ages 3-5)
At the sabji stall or supermarket, play "I spy" in Odia: "I spy something long and green" for ଭେଣ୍ଡି (okra), or "something round and orange" for କଖାରୁ. Then play Find it here at home with the same words.
Sort and count (ages 4-6)
Sort vegetables into leaves (ଶାଗ), roots and fruits-we-cook. Count onions in Odia with the numbers in Odia chart, and name colours with colours in Odia: ନାଲି ଟମାଟୋ, a red tomato.
Children often refuse କଲରା (bitter gourd). Instead of pushing, let them hold it, name it and describe its bumpy skin. Knowing a food's name is the first step towards trying it.
Vegetables in Odia festivals
During Kartika month, many Odia families eat only vegetarian food, and some avoid onion and garlic, so children see more କଖାରୁ, ଲାଉ and କଞ୍ଚା କଦଳୀ on the plate. At Rath Yatra time, the temple's Mahaprasad follows old rules and does not use potatoes, tomatoes or chillies, because these came to India later. That little fact makes a great story for curious five-year-olds.
For Odia families living away from Odisha
In Hyderabad, Pune or London you may not find ସଜନା ଛୁଇଁ (drumstick) or ଜହ୍ନି (ridge gourd) every week, but Indian grocers often have them frozen, and the picture keeps the word alive. Broccoli, capsicum and mushroom (ଛତୁ) are here too, so your child can name what is in the local supermarket. If your child knows the vegetables name in English and Hindi, Odia is a friendly third language. More Odia games are on learn Odia for kids.
Keep it short: five to ten minutes of play, together. Under-2s learn better from real vegetables in a basket than from a screen. There is no PDF file, but you can print this page from your browser to put the vegetable chart on the fridge. The game never says "wrong", and each round ends with a marble for the Goli Jar.
