If you want to learn Odia for kids at home, whether in Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru or Birmingham, this hub is a calm place to begin. It gathers seven small Odia games: the ବର୍ଣ୍ଣମାଳା (barnamala, the alphabet), numbers from one to a hundred, and picture words for animals, fruits, vegetables, colours and body parts. Every card shows the word in Odia script, a romanised "say it" guide and the English, so a grandparent, a parent who grew up in Odisha or a parent who is learning alongside the child can all join in. It is free, has no sign-up and no ads, and runs in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
What your child can play in Odia
Each game on this page opens with Listen: your child taps a picture and hears its name. Then comes Find it, where Golu, our friendly glass marble, asks for one picture at a time, and Memory, a gentle pairs game. The games never say "wrong". A mistaken tap gets a soft hint, and every round ends with a marble dropping into the Goli Jar, which your child can tap to count.
- Odia alphabet for kids: vowels and consonants, each with a picture word such as ଆମ୍ବ (mango) or ରଥ (chariot).

How the Odia sound works (please read)
Our recorded voice service does not offer an Odia voice, so we have no recorded Odia audio. When your child taps a card, the site asks your device to speak the Odia word with its own voice. Many Android phones have an Odia voice through Google or Samsung speech settings; some phones, most iPhones and many laptops do not. If there is no Odia voice, the English word is still spoken, and the Odia script and the "say it" guide appear on screen so a grown-up can read the word aloud. Your voice is the best Odia teacher your child will ever have.
To check your phone, open your device's text-to-speech settings and look for Odia (sometimes listed as Oriya). If it is there, install the voice data, then reload this page.
How to teach Odia to kids at home, step by step
Children pick up a home language from warm, repeated talk, not from drills. A few minutes of play plus a lot of everyday Odia does more than any worksheet.
- Ages 2-3: name things. Use Odia for food, family and the body during bath and meals. Play Listen on the animals page for three or four minutes, then stop.
- Ages 3-4: add colours and counting. Count stairs with ଏକ, ଦୁଇ, ତିନି. Try Find it with fewer choices (set the age in Settings).
- Ages 4-5: meet the letters. The classic primer Barnabodha (ବର୍ଣ୍ଣବୋଧ), written by Madhusudan Rao, teaches the vowels first, then the consonants. Our alphabet page follows the same order.
- Ages 5-6: start the ବାରଖଡ଼ି (barakhadi: ka, kaa, ki, kee) and read two-letter words together. Joined letters (ଯୁକ୍ତାକ୍ଷର) can wait until later.
Many Odia families mark a child's first letters with Khadi Chhuan (ଖଡ଼ି ଛୁଆଁ), when a child first writes with chalk, often on Saraswati Puja (Basant Panchami). If your child had this ceremony, the alphabet game is a lovely follow-up the next week.
Odia for families outside Odisha
Plenty of Odia families now live in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, the Gulf, the UK and the US, and the children hear more Kannada, Telugu, Arabic or English than Odia. Some simple habits keep the language alive:
- Choose one Odia moment a day: breakfast, bath or bedtime. Keep it predictable.
- Video-call grandparents and ask them to name three things from a game page; children love it when aja or jejemaa knows the words too.
- Use festivals. Rath Yatra, with the huge chariots of Lord Jagannath in Puri, is perfect for the word ରଥ. Raja Parba brings swings, Durga Puja brings colour and Kartika Purnima brings the little paper boats of Boita Bandana.
- Cook together. Pakhala on a hot day, a bowl of fruit, a plate of vegetables: every meal is a word game.

ପରିବାର ପାଇଁ ଦୁଇପଦ
ପିଲାଙ୍କୁ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଶିଖାଇବା ପାଇଁ ବହୁତ ସମୟ ଦରକାର ନାହିଁ। ଦିନକୁ ପାଞ୍ଚ ମିନିଟ୍ ଖେଳ ଆଉ ଘରେ ସବୁବେଳେ ଓଡ଼ିଆରେ କଥା ହେବା ଯଥେଷ୍ଟ। ଖାଇବା ବେଳେ, ଗାଧୋଇବା ବେଳେ ଓ ଶୋଇବା ଆଗରୁ ଛୋଟ ଛୋଟ ଶବ୍ଦ କୁହନ୍ତୁ।
ଏହି ଖେଳରେ ପିଲା ଛବି ଛୁଇଁଲେ ଶବ୍ଦଟି ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଅକ୍ଷରରେ ଦେଖାଯାଏ। ଯଦି ଆପଣଙ୍କ ଫୋନରେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ସ୍ୱର ଅଛି, ଫୋନ ଶବ୍ଦଟି ପଢ଼ି ଶୁଣାଇବ। ନ ଥିଲେ ଆପଣ ନିଜେ ପଢ଼ି ଶୁଣାନ୍ତୁ। ପିଲା ପାଇଁ ମା, ବାପା, ଜେଜେମା'ଙ୍କ ସ୍ୱର ହିଁ ସବୁଠାରୁ ଭଲ।

Screen time, patience and extra support
Keep sessions short, five to ten minutes, and sit with your child. Under-2s learn more from a grown-up and real objects than from any screen, so for them, use the word list as your own cheat sheet and play with real toys. If your child mixes Odia and English in one sentence, that is normal for bilingual children and not a problem. For children with speech delay or autism, turn on fewer choices and calm sound in Settings, repeat favourite cards, and talk to your paediatrician if you are worried about speech. How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: odia words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
