Domestic and pet animals in Urdu
Start with پالتو جانور (pāltū jānwar, domestic animals), the ones your child sees in the street, in the village or on Eid visits: گائے (cow), بیل (bail, bull), بھینس (bhains, buffalo), بکری (bakrī, goat), بھیڑ (bheṛ, sheep), گھوڑا (ghoṛā, horse), گدھا (gadhā, donkey) and اونٹ (ūnṭ, camel). Pets and small animals include بلی (cat), کتا (kuttā, dog), خرگوش (khargosh, rabbit) and چوہا (chūhā, mouse). These ten or twelve words are a perfect first set, and several appear on the Urdu alphabet cards: ب سے بکری, خ سے خرگوش.
Wild animals in Urdu
جنگلی جانور (janglī jānwar, wild animals) include شیر (lion), باگھ (bāgh, tiger), چیتا (chītā, leopard), ہاتھی (elephant), بھالو (bhālū, bear), بندر (bandar, monkey), ہرن (hiran, deer), زرافہ (zarāfa, giraffe), لومڑی (lomṛī, fox), بھیڑیا (bheṛiyā, wolf) and گیدڑ (gīdaṛ, jackal). Some names are wonderful descriptions: the hippo is دریائی گھوڑا, "river horse", and the seahorse is سمندری گھوڑا, "sea horse". The squirrel, گلہری (gilahrī), and the mongoose, نیولا (nevlā), are garden visitors many South Asian children know well.
A fun fact for parents: in everyday Urdu, شیر is used for both lion and tiger, and children call a brave child "sher" too. Pakistan's national animal is the markhor, a wild mountain goat with spiral horns, a nice picture to look up together.
Sea and water animals in Urdu
Water animals include مچھلی (machhlī, fish), سنہری مچھلی (goldfish), مینڈک (meinḍak, frog), کیکڑا (kekṛā, crab), جھینگا (jhīngā, prawn), ڈولفن (dolphin) and ستارہ مچھلی (starfish, "star fish"). Several sea animals use English names in Urdu, such as شارک (shark) and آکٹوپس (octopus), which gives bilingual children an easy win.

How to teach animal names in Urdu at home
- Five at a time. Choose five animals, play Listen for two minutes, then one round of Find it.
- Toy animals. Ask ہاتھی کہاں ہے؟ (hāthī kahāñ hai?, where is the elephant?).
- Act it out. Walk like ہاتھی, jump like بندر, hop like خرگوش.
- Animal sounds. Urdu speakers say a dog goes bhau bhau and a cat goes myāoñ. Try the animal sounds game too.
- Poems and stories. Many classic Urdu children's poems are about animals, such as the monkey, the parrot and the cat. Read one at bedtime and point to the animals.
Talk about kindness: putting out water for birds and cats in summer is a common habit in Urdu-speaking homes, and a lovely way to connect words with care.
What to expect by age
At 2-3, children learn 5-10 animals, mostly pets and farm animals, and love the sounds. At 3-4, they name 15-20 animals and sort them into pets, wild and water animals. At 4-5, they say short sentences like شیر بڑا ہے (the lion is big). At 5-6, they can read short joined words such as شیر and مور (peacock). Keep sessions short and play together.
