Numbers in Odia are one of the first things children learn at home, long before school: ଏକ, ଦୁଇ, ତିନି on the stairs, in the kitchen and at the market. This page gives your child a big 1 to 100 chart to tap. Each number shows its Odia name and its English name, and the chart can switch to Odia digits (୧ ୨ ୩). Press Count with me to go through 1 to 10, 1 to 20 or all the way to 100. It is free, with no sign-up and no ads.

How your child hears Odia numbers here

Please know this before you start: we have no recorded Odia voice. When your child taps a number, your device is asked to speak the Odia word with its own voice. That works if an Odia (Oriya) voice is installed, which many Android phones offer in Google or Samsung speech settings; some phones and most iPhones and laptops do not. If not, the English number is still spoken, and the Odia word and a romanised "say it" guide appear so a grown-up can count aloud. Counting together is better anyway.

Why Odia numbers 11 to 99 need patience

Like Hindi and Bengali, Odia number names after ten are not fully regular, so children learn them as words rather than by a rule. ଏଗାର (11) and ବାର (12) sound nothing like "ten and one". There is one handy pattern, though: numbers ending in 9 are said as "one less than" the next ten. ଊଣେଇଶି (19) is one short of କୋଡ଼ିଏ (20), ଅଣତିରିଶି (29) is one short of ତିରିଶି (30), and ଅନେଶତ (99) is one short of ଶହେ (100). Older children enjoy spotting this.

Also note that କୋଡ଼ିଏ (a score, twenty) is an old counting unit; grandparents in villages still count mangoes and coconuts in kodie. Ask them to show your child.

A simple plan by age

  • Age 2-3: say 1 to 5 in Odia while you count spoons, shoes or grapes. Rote chanting is fine; real counting comes later.
  • Age 3-4: 1 to 10, touching each object once. Try Count with me up to ten, then count real things.
  • Age 4-5: 1 to 20, and spot Odia digits on calendars, bus numbers and old wall clocks at your grandparents' house.
  • Age 5-6: tens to 100, and read two-digit Odia numerals. The Odia barnamala number chart in school books usually sits right after the letters.

Ordinal numbers in Odia (first, second, third) are Use them in a toy-car race or a queue of teddies, and your child learns them without effort.

Everyday counting ideas, in Odisha or abroad

Count the wheels on the Rath Yatra chariots in pictures, the lamps at Kartika Purnima, or the swings at Raja Parba. In Bengaluru, Dubai or London, count metro stops or apples in the trolley. Children who learn numbers in two languages are not slowed down; they simply have two ways to say the same idea. If your child learns English numbers at school, the counting 1 to 100 page is the English partner of this chart.

To print a number chart, use your browser's print option on this page; there is no PDF. Keep sessions to five or ten minutes and sit with your child. If your child finds numbers hard to remember, go back to 1 to 5 for a week. That is not falling behind, it is building a base.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: odia words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
