Why some Punjabi colour words change their ending

Here is something English does not do. In Punjabi, some colour words change with the thing they describe, just like Punjabi describing words in general. ਪੀਲਾ becomes ਪੀਲੀ for a feminine noun and ਪੀਲੇ for more than one:

Colours ending in a different sound, such as ਲਾਲ, ਗੁਲਾਬੀ (pink), ਜਾਮਨੀ (purple) and ਅਸਮਾਨੀ (sky blue), stay the same. Do not teach the rule to a three-year-old. Just use the right form while you talk, and your child will absorb it, as Punjabi children always have. The game uses the basic form.

Colours you will see in Punjab

Punjab is a colourful place to learn. In late winter the mustard fields turn a bright yellow that Punjabis call ਬਸੰਤੀ (basanti), the colour of spring. At Vaisakhi in April, bhangra dancers wear bold kurtas and giddha dancers wear bright dupattas. The embroidered ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ shawl mixes orange, pink, red and gold threads. Saffron, ਕੇਸਰੀ, is the colour of the Nishan Sahib flag at every gurdwara. Point these out at festivals and weddings: "ਵੇਖ, ਕਿੰਨਾ ਗੁਲਾਬੀ!" (look, how pink!).

Colour names that come from things

Several Punjabi colour names are named after something your child can touch:

• ਸੰਤਰੀ (orange) from ਸੰਤਰਾ, the fruit.
• ਜਾਮਨੀ (purple) from ਜਾਮਣ, the purple java plum.
• ਗੁਲਾਬੀ (pink) from ਗੁਲਾਬ, the rose.
• ਅਸਮਾਨੀ (sky blue) from ਅਸਮਾਨ, the sky.
• ਸਲੇਟੀ (grey) from ਸਲੇਟ, the slate children once wrote on.

How to teach colours in Punjabi, age by age

• Ages 2-3: Name one colour a week. Wear ਲਾਲ on red day, eat a red tomato, and play Listen mode. Most two-year-olds match colours before they can name them, so matching is already a success.
• Ages 3-4: Play Find it, then an "I spy" at home: ਕੁਝ ਨੀਲਾ ਲੱਭੋ (find something blue).
• Ages 4-5: Sort toys, socks or blocks into colour piles and say the names. Mix paints: yellow and blue make ਹਰਾ.
• Ages 5-6: Use two words together: ਲਾਲ ਸੇਬ, ਪੀਲਾ ਕੇਲਾ. Add shapes for "a red circle".

Playing the colour game

With only 12 colours, this is a quick, friendly game for the youngest players. In Listen mode, your child taps a colour splash and hears, for example, ਨੀਲਾ and then "blue".
