Vegetables name in Punjabi is a lesson you can hold in your hands, because the words live in the kitchen. This page has 30 vegetables with a picture, the Punjabi name, the English name and clear audio. Your child taps ਆਲੂ (aaloo, potato) or ਗਾਜਰ (gaajar, carrot) to hear it, then plays Find it and Memory. It is free, with no sign-up and no ads. The word list above has every name.
Punjabi vegetable words that differ from Hindi
Many Punjabi vegetable names match Hindi, like ਮਟਰ (peas) and ਪਾਲਕ (spinach). A few are distinctly Punjabi, and those are the ones grandparents love to hear a child say:
| English | Punjabi | Say it | Hindi, for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onion | ਗੰਢਾ | gandha | प्याज़ |
| Bottle gourd | ਘੀਆ | gheeya | लौकी |
| Corn on the cob | ਛੱਲੀ | chhalli | भुट्टा |
| Mushroom | ਖੁੰਭ | khumbh | मशरूम |
| Drumstick | ਸੁਹਾਂਜਣਾ | suhaanjana | सहजन |
| Cucumber | ਖੀਰਾ | kheera | खीरा |
Say ਗੰਢਾ with your child while chopping onions for the tadka. It is a word children remember because onions make everyone's eyes water.
10 vegetables name in Punjabi to start with
For a first list, pick vegetables your child sees most days: ਆਲੂ (potato), ਟਮਾਟਰ (tomato), ਗੰਢਾ (onion), ਗਾਜਰ (carrot), ਮਟਰ (peas), ਗੋਭੀ (cauliflower), ਭਿੰਡੀ (okra), ਪਾਲਕ (spinach), ਮੂਲੀ (radish) and ਮਿਰਚ (chilli). Add ਅਦਰਕ (ginger) and ਲਸਣ (garlic) when your child starts noticing smells.
Sarson da saag, makki di roti and winter greens
No Punjabi vegetable lesson is complete without winter. When the mustard fields of Punjab turn yellow, families cook ਸਰ੍ਹੋਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਗ, mustard greens slow-cooked with spinach, and serve it with ਮੱਕੀ ਦੀ ਰੋਟੀ, cornmeal flatbread, and a lump of white butter. ਮੇਥੀ (fenugreek leaves) and ਮੂਲੀ (radish) fill parathas at the same time of year. Lohri in January often brings this meal to the table, which makes it a perfect week to practise the leafy green words: ਪਾਲਕ, ਮੇਥੀ and ਧਨੀਆ (coriander).
Mustard greens are not one of the 30 pictures in the game, so teach ਸਰ੍ਹੋਂ in the kitchen, alongside the spinach and fenugreek your child can tap on screen.
How to teach vegetable names at home
- Ages 2-3: Put two vegetables on the table and name them. Let your child roll a ਆਲੂ and squeeze a ਟਮਾਟਰ (gently).
- Ages 3-4: Play Find it on screen, then a real "find it" in the vegetable basket.
- Ages 4-5: Sort by colour: red ਟਮਾਟਰ, orange ਗਾਜਰ, green ਭਿੰਡੀ, white ਮੂਲੀ. The colours in Punjabi game helps here.
- Ages 5-6: Sort by where they grow: under the ground (ਆਲੂ, ਗਾਜਰ, ਮੂਲੀ) or above it (ਮਟਰ, ਭਿੰਡੀ, ਬੈਂਗਣ).
Grow something. A few coriander seeds in a pot sprout in about a week, and your child will say ਧਨੀਆ with pride every morning.
For families outside Punjab
If you live in Canada, the UK, the US or Australia, broccoli and mushrooms may be more familiar than ਘੀਆ or ਤੋਰੀ (ridge gourd). Both kinds are in the game. Use the supermarket as your classroom, and save the Punjabi-only vegetables for visits to an Indian grocer or for grandparents' cooking on a video call.
How the vegetable game works
The game opens in Listen mode: tap any picture and hear the Punjabi name, then the English one, in a clear recorded computer voice. Find it mode asks for one vegetable and shows two to four pictures; younger children get fewer choices. If your child taps the wrong one, the game never says "wrong". It names what was tapped, makes the right picture glow, and Golu points the way if needed. Memory mode turns the vegetables into a pairs game. Every finished round drops a marble in the Goli Jar, saved on your device with no account. Try one round before dinner and one while you cook, then compare the screen with the real ਗਾਜਰ on the chopping board.
Gentle tips for picky eaters and busy days
Learning a vegetable's name is not the same as eating it, and that is fine. Naming, touching and helping to cook lower the fear of new food without any pressure. Praise the effort of trying a word. Keep screen play short and shared; toddlers under two learn far more from a real carrot than from a picture. If you have worries about eating or growth, talk to your paediatrician. Next, try fruits name in Punjabi, the English and Hindi vegetables name page, or go back to learn Punjabi for kids.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: punjabi words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
