Numbers in Turkish are wonderfully logical, which makes them a great first maths project for young children: learn ten small words and nine tens, and you can count all the way to 99. These ten words use several special letters: ü and ç in üç, ö in dört, ş in beş and dotless ı in altı. Counting is a fun way to hear them.
Numbers 11 to 19: ten and one
Turkish teens are completely regular. You say "ten" then the small number: on bir (11, "ten one"), on iki (12), on üç (13), all the way to on dokuz (19). There are no special words like English "eleven" and "twelve", so children who know 1-10 can count to 19 almost at once. Point this out on the number chart: the top row and the second row sound nearly the same.
Counting in tens up to 100
The tens each have their own short word: on (10), yirmi (20), otuz (30), kırk (40), elli (50), altmış (60), yetmiş (70), seksen (80), doksan (90) and yüz (100). Notice that altmış and yetmiş sound like altı and yedi, and seksen and doksan echo sekiz and dokuz.
Then the same pattern as the teens: yirmi bir (21), otuz beş (35), doksan dokuz (99). Children who learn this in Turkish often find place value easier, because the words say "ninety nine" in the same order as the digits.
A neat rule: no plural after numbers
In English we say "one apple, three apples". In Turkish the noun stays the same after a number: bir elma, üç elma; bir kedi, beş kedi. The number already tells you there are many, so there is no -ler/-lar ending. This makes counting objects very easy for young children. Put three toy cats in a row and say "Üç kedi!"
How Turkish children learn to count
Children in Türkiye usually learn counting through songs, finger play and rhymes at home and in kindergarten (anaokulu). Hide-and-seek, saklambaç, is a classic: the seeker counts to ten or twenty with eyes closed, calling "Önüm, arkam, sağım, solum sobe!" at the end. Preschool maths focuses on counting objects, comparing more and less and recognising digits, with most children confident to 10 by 5 and to 20 at the start of school.
Counting games for home
- Stairs. Count steps in Turkish every time you go up.
- Breakfast count. Count olives, cherry tomatoes or slices of simit: "Kaç tane?" ("How many?").
- Saklambaç. Play hide-and-seek and count aloud together.
- Goli Jar. After each game, tap the jar and count the marbles in Turkish.
- Print this page. The number tables print cleanly from your browser as a mini chart.
For a 2-3 year old, counting to 3 with real things is a big step. Count fingers, spoons and shoes before you use the number chart.
Tips for bilingual families
Children in schools in Germany, the Netherlands or the UK may start counting in the school language at home. That is fine. Keep one routine, such as counting stairs or dice, in Turkish, and let grandparents count along on video calls. When your child is ready for more, try counting 1 to 10, the 1-100 chart and addition for kids in English, or explore learn Turkish for kids.
First, second, third
Ordinal numbers are regular too. Add -inci (the vowel changes with vowel harmony) to the number: birinci (first), ikinci (second), üçüncü (third), dördüncü (fourth), onuncu (tenth). Children hear these in races and queues: "Sen birincisin!" ("You are first!").
1'den 100'e kadar sayılar

How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: turkish words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
