You can learn Russian for kids here in short, playful steps: the 33 Cyrillic letters, counting from 1 to 100, and more than 160 picture words for animals, fruits, vegetables, colours and body parts. Every word is spoken in clear audio in Russian and English, so a child who cannot read yet can still tap, listen and play. How young children learn Russian in Russian-speaking homes
Russian-speaking families usually start with talk, songs and finger games long before letters. Toddlers hear потешки (short nursery rhymes) such as "Ладушки, ладушки" while clapping, and finger games like "Сорока-белобока". Fairy tales are everywhere: Колобок, the round bun who rolls away from everyone, and Репка, the giant turnip that the whole family pulls together. These stories repeat the same lines again and again, which is exactly what a young language learner needs.
Reading is taught in a way that surprises many English-speaking parents. Children learn letter sounds from the азбука or букварь (the first reading book), then quickly join them into syllables (слоги): МА, МА → МАМА; ПА, ПА → ПАПА. Many kindergartens use syllable cubes (the Zaitsev method, кубики Зайцева), where each block shows a chunk like МУ or ЛО. Reading syllable by syllable works well because Russian spelling is fairly regular, although stress and vowel changes still need practice.
What to expect at each age
| Age | Typical Russian goals | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 | Understands and says 20-50 everyday words | Animals, body parts, мама, папа, баба |
| 3-4 | Counts 1-5, names colours, short phrases | Colours, fruits, counting songs |
| 4-5 | Recognises many letters, counts to 10-20 | Alphabet cards, number chart |
| 5-6 | Joins letters into syllables, reads short words | МА-МА, КО-ТЯ, ДОМ |
How to use these Russian games
Open any game and let your child tap pictures in Listen mode first. Each tap plays the Russian word, then the English one. When a few words feel familiar, switch to Find it: Golu, our glass-marble mascot, asks for a picture and your child taps it. A wrong tap never says "wrong"; it names what was tapped and gently points to the answer. Every finished round drops a marble into the Goli Jar, and you can count the marbles together, in Russian if you like: один, два, три.
Five minutes a day beats one long session a week. Stop while your child still wants more, and put the phone away to find the real thing: a real яблоко, a real кошка, a real red ball.
Tips for Russian-speaking families abroad
If you live in Germany, Israel, the US, the UK, Canada or anywhere else, your child's school language will grow fast and Russian can fade. A few habits help keep it alive:
- One place, one language. Many families keep Russian for home, bedtime stories and calls with grandparents.
- Video calls with бабушка and дедушка. Ask grandparents to play "find it" with a toy animal on camera.
- Weekend Russian school. Many cities have Saturday schools where children read the букварь together.
- Watch for look-alike letters. Cyrillic Р sounds like "r", В like "v" and Н like "n", so children who already read English may mix them up. Laugh about it and treat them as "trick letters".
Russian and Ukrainian share the Cyrillic script but are separate languages with different words. If your family speaks Ukrainian, try Ukrainian for kids, and see all our languages for kids.

Занимайтесь понемногу, пять-десять минут в день. Читайте сказки, пойте потешки, считайте ступеньки и яблоки. Хвалите ребёнка за старание, а не только за правильный ответ.
Если вы живёте за границей, говорите с ребёнком по-русски дома и звоните бабушке и дедушке. Так родной язык останется живым и радостным.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: russian words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
