Colours name in Gujarati are some of the most useful words for a young child, and Gujarat is a wonderful place to learn them: think of bandhani fabric, Navratri chaniya choli, Uttarayan kites and Diwali rangoli. Colour words with little stories
- વાદળી (blue) comes from વાદળ (vādaḷ), cloud. Gujarati is one of the few languages that names blue after the rain clouds.
- રાખોડી (grey) comes from રાખ (rākh), ash.
- જાંબલી (purple) comes from જાંબુ, the dark purple jamun fruit.
- ગુલાબી (pink) comes from ગુલાબ, the rose, and નારંગી (orange) from the orange fruit.
- આસમાની (sky blue) comes from આસમાન, the sky.

Why colours change: પીળો, પીળી, પીળું
Gujarati has three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter. Colour words ending in -o change to match the thing they describe, while others stay the same:

The game says the basic form. At home, describe real things and your child will pick up the endings by ear. There is no need to teach grammar to a preschooler.
Colours in Gujarati festivals and crafts
Colour is everywhere in Gujarati life. At Navratri, families dance garba in bright લાલ, પીળો and લીલો clothes decorated with mirrors. At Uttarayan in January, the sky fills with kites of every colour: a perfect "name the colour" game from the terrace. Kutch is famous for bandhani tie-dye, with dots of colour on red and black cloth, and Patan for its patola silk. At Diwali, children help make rangoli at the door. Each of these is a natural moment to name colours.
How to teach colours in Gujarati at home
- Ask often. આ કયો રંગ છે? (ā kayo rang chhe?, what colour is this?)
- Colour of the day. "Today is લીલો day!" Find green things together.
- Kite colours. Name the colour of each kite, real or drawn.
- Rangoli. Name each colour of powder or chalk as your child uses it.
- Mix paint. વાદળી and પીળો make લીલો.

What to expect by age
Colour names are abstract, so every child takes time. At 2-3, children may say colour words before using them correctly, and that is normal. By 3-4, most match and name 4-6 colours. At 4-5, they name 8-10 colours and describe things: લાલ ગાડી. At 5-6, they read short colour words and use the endings naturally. If your child keeps confusing red and green for a long time, try matching before naming and mention it to your paediatrician in case of a colour vision difference. Colours for every child
Some children take longer to learn colour words, especially those with speech delay, autism or a colour vision difference. Start with matching: put a red block beside a red cup and say લાલ, without asking your child to speak. Then ask them to hand you the red one. Saying the word comes last. The grown-up settings let you choose fewer choices, calm sound or high contrast if these help. Praise effort as well as right answers: શાબાશ! Every child learns colours at their own pace.

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
