Polish colours and things to point at

Colour words in Polish are longer than in English, and several use the special letters: żółty has three of them. Many colour names come from things: pomarańczowy from pomarańcza (orange fruit), różowy from róża (rose), fioletowy from fiołek (violet flower) and niebieski from niebo (sky).

Niebieski and błękitny: two blues

Niebieski is the everyday word for blue. Błękitny is the light, clear blue of a summer sky, and Polish children often learn it as a special, pretty word. Poles also say granatowy for navy blue, the colour of many school uniforms. On this page, błękitny is the "sky blue" card.

The Polish flag: biało-czerwona

The Polish flag is white on top and red below, and Poles often call it simply biało-czerwona, "the white-and-red". Children wave it on Święto Niepodległości, Independence Day on 11 November, and on Flag Day, 2 May. In przedszkole they make paper flags and learn the rhyme "Kto ty jesteś? Polak mały". It is a natural way to learn biały and czerwony together.

Why Polish colours change their ending

In Polish, colour words change to match the noun: czerwony balon (a red balloon), czerwona truskawka (a red strawberry), czerwone jabłko (a red apple). The audio on this page uses the basic form ending in -y or -i. Young children pick up the right endings slowly, by hearing them hundreds of times. Don't explain grammar; just repeat the phrase correctly: if your child says "czerwony truskawka", reply "Tak, czerwona truskawka!"

How to teach colours in Polish at home

  1. Colour of the day. Pick zielony and find five green things together.
  2. Getting dressed. "Dziś masz niebieską czapkę!" (Today you have a blue hat.)
  3. Fruit sort. Sort fruits by colour with fruits in Polish.
  4. Paint and mix. Żółty and niebieski make zielony. Children love this "magic".
  5. Colour and name. Use our coloring pages for kids and name each colour in Polish.

Play the Polish playground game "Raz, dwa, trzy, Baba Jaga patrzy!" with a colour twist: before you turn round, call a colour, and everyone must be touching something of that colour. Add counting with numbers in Polish.

What to expect by age

Colour names are abstract, so be patient. At two to three, most children match colours before they name them. At three to four, they name the main four: czerwony, żółty, niebieski, zielony. At four to five, they know most of the twelve. At five to six, they describe objects with colours and start using the right endings. If your child confuses red and green for a long time, mention it to your paediatrician; colour vision differences are common and easy to check. Keep screen time short and shared. For English and Hindi names, see colours name in Hindi and English, or compare the colours in Ukrainian.

Polish makes colours lighter or darker with two little words: jasny (light) and ciemny (dark). Light green is jasnozielony and dark blue is ciemnoniebieski, joined into one long word. Older children love inventing new ones while painting: jasnoróżowy, ciemnoczerwony. It shows how Polish builds long words out of short, familiar parts.

For families abroad, colours are an easy daily habit: ask "Jaki to kolor?" (What colour is it?) about toys, cars and clothes, and let your child ask you back. If your child answers in English, simply repeat the Polish word warmly and carry on. Children who hear Polish every day keep it, even when they speak mostly English at school.

Kolory dla dzieci

Tutaj dziecko uczy się dwunastu kolorów z obrazkiem i nagraniem: czerwony, żółty, niebieski, zielony, pomarańczowy, fioletowy, różowy, brązowy, czarny, biały, szary i błękitny. Dotknij koloru, a usłyszysz go po polsku i po angielsku.

Szukajcie kolorów w domu i na spacerze, sortujcie klocki, mieszajcie farby i zróbcie razem biało-czerwoną flagę. Mówcie pełnymi zdaniami: „Jabłko jest czerwone”, a dziecko samo nauczy się końcówek.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: polish words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
